I still owe you my 2010 year in review post. I'm on it... promise! But for now you'll have to make do with my last day net worth for January. Looks like the stock market is doing pretty well because I'm up a bit. By tracking it on the last day of the month, I hope to keep the numbers more consistent based on the usual fluctuations of paying bills and stuff like that. And here's January!
Liquid Assets
Cash (checking, MMA, W2S): $39,485.27
GNMA: $14,973.62
Total Bond Index: $15,117.61
Total Stock Index: $27,149.15
Total Liquid: $96,725.65
Percent Change: 0.91%
Retirement Assets
Roth IRA (Target 2045): $6,214.79
403(b) (S&P 500 Index): $18,831.96
Total Retirement: $25,046.75
Percent Change: 1.43%
Total Net worth: $121,772.40
Percent Change: 1.02%
Not too shabby... I think I want to set a net worth goal for 2011. What do you think is a realistic number? 140,000? Less? More?
Today I'm grateful for: a successful weekend and the long nap that followed.

Updates
(1) I've begun telling people at work that I'm leaving in June. I know it seems early, but in my line of work, there needs to be a long lead time to find my replacement. It's been hard telling people, but each time it gets a little easier, a little more matter of fact. I'm sad, but I know it's the right decision. There's no going back now.
(2) I'm up $650 in birthday money this month. It's going to be a good month for my net worth!
(3) I just signed up for my last class for my certificate. Then I found out that due to some errors on their side, they are going to give me a class for free! I hope that there won't be any confusion because I signed up for the last class before I knew about the free class. An extra $450 in savings is a huge win and another boost to the net worth! January is going to be a big month.
(4) Things are busy at work and pretty much everything--money, dating, life--is on auto-pilot. I have a date planned for next week that I'm really excited for, my spending has been relatively low because I've been superbusy at work, and I've spent a lot of quiet nights at home.
Today I'm grateful for: My sister is coming to visit this weekend. I'm really excited to see her.

Rent and Landlord Lady Part 2
I got a letter in the mail on Saturday from my landlord. It was addressed to the wrong address... yes, from my landlord. Yes, the one who owns my building. Anyway, moving on. My rent is going up by $25 a month again like it did in November of 2009 (but at least she sent it to the right place last time...). This brings my rent up to $900 a month for my one bedroom, which is still cheap by DC standards. I'm not thrilled about this, but I'm not planning on moving either. I don't think I would find anything comparable for anywhere near the same price.
Maybe my eventual new job will prompt me to look into other housing options, but right now I'm staying put. And my rent will be more come March 1. Bleh.

Age, Weight and Salary
I came across an interesting poll in Parade Magazine (included with my Sunday newspaper). Asking if you would rather admit your age, weight or salary. The results were:
Age: 77%
Weight: 15%
Salary: 8%
I think the results are probably pretty accurate for the general public. But we're personal finance bloggers! We're open about our money! Do you feel differently about sharing these things? So what's your age, weight and salary? Share in the comments or share on your own blog. Or share why you don't want to share those things!
Me...
Age: 28 (as of Sunday!)
Weight: 103 pounds (I think? I hardly ever weigh myself)
Salary: $44,500 (as of January 1st)
Today I'm grateful for: a wonderful birthday with friends and 150+ birthday wishes on facebook

Today is my 28th birthday. And, as promised, here is my list of 28 realistic and unrealistic goals/intentions/resolutions for my 28th year. You'll see some repeats, you'll see some new additions and hopefuly some things that I'll complete this year. Just like last year, I might revisit this list again. I might not. iphone
I have a secret confession. My iphone 4 makes me feel superior to people. I've never said that aloud, or typed it or anything, but it's true. It's not something I plan on telling anyone but my anonymous public, but it's still true. In DC, where I sometimes feel like my extended crowd (not my closest friends, but people who I see socially in large groups) have lots of toys and designer products, I feel like my iphone 4 gives me the cred to hang with the big kids. I love how it feels when someone says "oh, you have the iphone 4?" with a touch of jealousy in their voice.
In some deep, silly way, I feel like it was fate that I lost my phone, so I could be upgraded to the newest, sleekest model. I was able to sell my found iphone 3G for $180 in cash on Craigslist, so I don't feel quite as guilty for having the newest one. But I do feel a little guilty that having this phone can give me this much of a boost. But, if I can afford it, love it and it makes me feel good, it's okay, right?
Are there any products, items, "toys" or whatever that help make you feel like you fit in?
Today I'm grateful for: potential dating opportunities (yes, plural!)

Random Updates
(1) My next pay check is going to be bigger! Our fiscal year goes from June to June, but for some reason the raises go into effect in January. In addition to that, I contributed less to my flexible health spending account this year because it no longer covers over the counter meds. Each of my paychecks are going to be $64.14 more from now on.
(2) Munchkin's dad's work situation changed, so starting in February I won't be babysitting her regularly anymore. Lame.
(3) I have been a bit loser with my spending so far and I'm happy with it. I spent $45 at Lush switching to more natural body products (got face wash, shampoo, body wash, a face mask and a number of samples) and I spent $154 at Lululemon on an amazing jacket and yoga top. All were things that I wanted, quality products and will get a lot of use. I think that is my shopping criteria from now on.
(4) I am going to be getting a lot of yoga for free from now on. I just started training at my yoga studio to work at the desk. They pay in class credits, discounts and free stuff. It might not be the most cost effective use of time (a two hour shift works out to about $8/hr), but I think the intangibles make it worth it. I am going to strengthen my involvement in the community, meet new people and deepen my practice. Win.
(5) I told the senior staff at work that I'll be finishing my job at the end of the academic year. Everyone was so wonderful and supportive. I love where I work and I'm really sad to leave, but I know it's time. There's no going back now!
(6) I left jdate for good. If I ever talk about going back, kick some sense into me, please! I hate that site and I am so over it. However, I have 2 potential set ups in my future. I'll keep you posted. 2011 is my year for love. For reals.

3 Lesons Learned from Munchkin: Part 3
I'm still babysitting Munchkin and am already up to $120 in extra income this month, but she's given me so much more.
Lesson 1: If you say "pretend like" or "pretend that", anything is possible.
Grown ups just don't use their imagination enough.
Lesson 2: Things going on outside your life impact your life.
Like a friend's parents getting divorced or Mommy getting a new job. Sometimes transitions are hard and might make you act differently. Sometimes it's hard to process your emotions and you need someone's help working through it all.
Lesson 3: Time keeps moving.
Day to day nothing seems to change but slowly, ever so slowly we grow, learn and become more grown up. Munchkin is growing so fast, I can't even stand it!
Today I'm grateful for: a new journal and some new thoughts on how to use it.

Realistic/Unrealistic 2010 Goal Wrap Up
Last year I made 27 goals to correspond with my 27th year. I was pretty non-committal about them, saying:
"I might revisit this list again. I might not. I might do all 27 things on this list. I might not. But I'm not going to stress about it."
Well I am revisiting the list and I'm pretty happy with how I did. I did 17 of things, didn't do 5 of them and I'm not sure exactly how to measure 5 (those ones are labeled IDK for I don't know). For some of them it was a bit subjective, but it's my goal list, so I get to decide if I completed everything or not!
(1) Go to a DC PF Happy Hour. - YES!
I went to a couple and I'm really glad I did.
(2) Play the CVS game, get a lot of stuff for free and donate most of it. Keep track of what I get for free.- YES!
I started off strong with tracking this on my other blog but then I got a bit lazy. In December I still did a few CVS trips, I just didn't keep track. I'm not sure if I'm going to keep doing this in 2011. Do you even care?
(3) Meet the man I am going to marry - NO! I'm a dating failure. And I'm kind of over it. Unless I met him and just didn't realize it yet.
(4) Buy a condo (or at least come a lot closer than I currently am...) - NO!
I realized I wasn't ready and probably won't be for awhile. I want one, but I don't think I can afford one and I'm not sure what the future will bring, so I'm not sure if it's even a good idea.
(5) Earn an extra $3,000-$5,000 this year on top of my salary - YES!
If you include gifts, I made $9,342.85 (which includes the $4,500 I was reimbursed for class). Not counting gifts, I made $3,742.85 which includes babysitting, catering (which I've pretty much stopped), selling stuff, blog income, and rebates.
(6) Eat more organics - YES!
I'm going to count this as a win. I've definitely done more shopping at Trader Joe's and have been working to cut out a lot of processed food from my diet. I certainly don't eat all organic, but I think I'm doing better with my diet than during 2009.
(7) Take a cooking class - NO!
Didn't happen.
(8) Take a yoga teacher training class - YES!
I did and I'm glad I did. I'm not going to teach, but it further committed me to my practice.
(9) Figure out how to do a lot more stuff with my blog - YES!
I now track stats, have earned some income, changed the design (though it still isn't where I'd like it to be), had a giveaway, been contacted by advertisers and people wanting me to review their products. I think I'm a better blogger, but I still have a long way to go.
(10)Eat less sugar and more vegetables - IDK
I'm not sure quite how to measure this. I think I've started to eat healthier more of the time, but I still have a sweet tooth and that isn't going away any time soon.
(11)Slow dance - YES!
Wedding season is good for slow dancing.
(12)Stay consistent with my blogging - YES!
I haven't stopped blogging and I have blogged at least twice a week (for a total of 8 times a month) or as many as 17 times in one month.
(13)Develop more of a personal style - YES!
I'm trying new things and new combinations and have discovered some amazing fashion bloggers who have inspired me.
(14)Be more of a minimalist - YES!
I'm never going to be the kind of minimalist who only has 100 things, but I have reduced the amount of clutter in my apartment and am much more mindful about what I bring into my apartment.
(15)Wear make up more regularly and try a few new things in my beauty regimen - YES
I'm going to say yes on this even though I stopped wearing makeup regularly. I have tried a few new products, types of make up and techniques.
(16)Seriously look at other jobs - YES
I'm going to call this a yes because I did start the certificate program which will lead me to new jobs. I have been (infrequently) keeping an eye on what's out there.
(17)Finally buy a black purse that I love - YES!
I did. And now I can't find that post.
(18)Get my Netflix queue to under 100 movies (right now I'm near 180) - NO!
Right now I'm at 115 between adding and removing movies.
(19)Win something on a blog - YES!
I won 3 things this year. Not too shabby.
(20)Live the life I want now - IDK
I'm just not sure what to say on this one.
(21)Be proactive - IDK
Or one this one...
(22)Wash my dishes every day - Yes
I'm going to give myself a lower-case yes without an exclamation point. I definitely don't ALWAYS do this, but I'm much better than I used to be.
(23)Tackle cleaning/straightening up some part of my apartment every day - Yes
Same as 22. I try to pick up a few things every night before I go to bed, but my apartment is still not always pristine.
(24)Read more books - YES
I haven't kept specific track of how many books I've read, but I've definitely been making trips to the library.
(25)Be happy - IDK
I don't think I'm there yet, but I don't think I'm not either.
(26)Laugh so hard I cry - NO
But I have had a lot of hysterical moments.
(27)Work more on single tasking than multi-tasking - IDK
I'm not sure how to measure this, but I haven't been as good at this as I would like.
I will do a 28 goals for my 28th year, but I'm going to save that for later on the month and post it on my actual birthday.

Jamaica and other life realizations
Just before New Year's I got back from a trip to Jamaica with my family (yes, Money Maus and I realized that we're living parallel lives!). I'm not a major picture taker like some other bloggers, so I don't have any beautiful photos to show you. I mostly spend the week reading on the beach, on a zip-line adventure with my sister and basically just hanging out. The weather wasn't as great as we had hoped. The cold front that brought so much snow to the northeast brought cooler temps to Jamaica and the beach time was kind of a bust by the end of the week. Bummer.
However, I realized some pretty major things on the trip:
(1) I've gotten really used to being by myself. Living by myself. Traveling by myself (usually to visit someone else though). Doing things when, why and how I want them to be done. By the end of the trip, my family was annoying me so much. I love them, but I was so ready to go by the time everything was finished. Is it good or bad to be this used to being alone?
(2) Why am I so reluctant to spend money? I'm going to inherit a LOT of money someday. Like I will definitely be "me in millions" when my parents die (not that I EVER want them to die, but...). I'm going to be a little bit more free with my spending from now on. Nothing crazy, mind you, but I'm going to occasionally eat out (or get take out) by myself. I'm going to spend a little more on beauty products. I'm not going to feel guilty about doing more of my grocery shopping at Trader Joe's and Whole Foods. I'm going to invest in more quality clothing pieces and not try so hard to avoid the mall. I'm going to do some traveling when I finish my job and spend enough to have a good time. Why avoid spending if you can afford it?
(3) I am so lucky. There is such poverty in some places in Jamaica and I (we?) are so lucky to have more opportunities. I'm guilty of forgetting this more often than I'd like to admit.
What do you think about these things?
Today I'm grateful for: loosening the purse strings. It's time.
